The Marqueyssac Gardens

Located in the southern Dordogne, the Hanging Gardens of Marqueyssac are on the list of remarkable gardens of France. Surrounding the 18th century castle, the grounds extend for around 4 miles of shaded walks, lined with 150,000 hand-trimmed boxwoods, and embellished with gazebos, rock gardens, waterfalls and open air theaters…

The pruning of boxwoods🌿

Originally created as a garden dedicated to topiary art, it is made up of boxwoods crowned with cypresses and strewn with Naples cyclamen (which form fabulous colorful displays from August to October). It also includes numerous species such as oaks, maples and arbutus trees.

But the ecosystem of the estate is not limited to the floral world. The emblem of the place where it lives in freedom, the peacock with its inimitable shimmering colors also contributes to the beauty of the park. And in the Pavillon de la Nature Kléber Rossillon, which has been named after him, the current owner of the domain exhibits in the place of honor an almost complete skeleton of an allosaurus dating from the Upper Jurassic period.

Built on a rocky spur 426 feet above the river, the park offers a view of the valley, the surrounding castles and villages, making these gardens the most visited in the Périgord.
